Everybody makes mistakes. But some can be more serious than others. Police throughout Utah are cracking down on drunk drivers. KUTV television news anchor Shauna Lake found out the hard way. Lake returned to the air after her recent DUI arrest in Salt Lake City. She gave an emotional apology to not only her viewers, but to also her two sons. “I drank alcohol after I got off work and then I chose to get behind the wheel of my car,” Lake said. “I’m ashamed and humiliated by my decision. I was selfish. I could have hurt someone else of myself.”

The Hard Lessons of DUI

There is often a stereotype that comes with those who are arrested for DUI in Salt Lake City. But Lake’s arrest only proves it can happen to anyone. And the consequences can be severe. In many cases DUI arrests have nothing to do with a person’s erratic driving.  In the case of Shauna Lake, she was pulled over at 12:20 am on May 10 because her license plate had been canceled. As the arresting officer was writing his report, he discovered a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside her Land Rover. He also noticed Lake’s eyes were bloodshot. She was later booked into Salt Lake County Jail after allegedly failing a field sobriety test.

The Importance DUI Defense

Although Lake apologized for the arrest, it is still not clear whether she was actually drunk. According to her Salt Lake City DUI attorney, Lake pled not guilty to DUI, which is a Class B misdemeanor in Utah. She was also charged with using a license plate registered to another vehicle and having an open container of alcohol along with no vehicle registration.

It is easy to jump to conclusions. Although all people arrested for DUI are innocent until proven guilty, we live in a society where people are often judged by the court of public opinion. For Shauna Lake, the stakes are high. Not only does she face having a criminal record, her DUI arrest can severely damage her reputation. She could lose her job and have trouble finding work again.
