The Trump presidency is six months old. But there is one noticeable trend in Utah and throughout the country that has much of the immigrant population on edge. A recent Washington Post article revealed the amount of arrests involving immigrants has increased 37.6 percent over the past year. But makes the trend more disturbing is the sharp increase of arrests involving immigrants with no criminal record, which has doubled since 2016. According to the Salt Lake City Tribune, those number get even worse in Utah. Arrest rates have tripled for undocumented non criminal immigrants. Those numbers also include neighboring states Idaho, Montana and Nevada.
The First 100 Days
Since the FDR Administration, the first 100 days of a presidency has served as a benchmark for each succeeding president. During the 100 days of the Trump presidency, the statistics on the arrest of non criminal immigrants speak for themselves. A total of 245 non criminal immigrants were arrested in the region. To put into perspective on the sharp rise. Only 75 were arrested during the same period a year ago. Curiously, there was very little difference in the arrest numbers of immigrants with a criminal history.
The Consequences of Immigrant Arrests
Do the increased arrest numbers equate to a reduction of crime in Salt Lake City? Not necessarily. Instead, it has cause more fear among the immigrant community. Because many fear about getting deported, there is less cooperation with law enforcement. According to Sergeant Brian Taylor of the Provo Police Department, the tougher policies against immigrants has created a reverse effect.
“If any member of the community or segment of the community is afraid to work with the local police, that makes the entire community less safe,” Taylor told The Daily Utah Chronicle. “And if that segment of the community stops participating in reporting, it make the entire city less safe.”
A Violation of Civil Rights
The aggressive action by Utah law enforcement towards undocumented immigrants poses a threat to their civil rights. Those who have never committed a crime a little threat to the State of Utah. Rather, they only add to society. Immigration gives people the opportunity to improve their lives. It improves and adds more diversity to society as a whole. The targeting of non violent immigrants only creates a society of fear.
