The year is barely four months old. However, federal prosecutors have been busy in St. George County, UT–particular when it comes to gun crime. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 15 gun crime cases have been filed since the beginning of the year. The majority of the defendants have a history of felony convictions, including drug possession and violations of other federal laws. So far, two have plead guilty and await sentencing.

The Federal Crackdown on Gun Crimes in Utah

The logical question is why there are so many gun crime cases in one county during such a short period of time? According to Utah U.S. Attorney John W. Huber, federal firearm laws are among the most effective tools to help violent crimes and protect the people of Utah. Since the November elections, there is a greater effort from the law enforcement community to crack down on those accused of gun crimes. But does it really reduce the amount of crime? The argument can often get heated, depending on where you stand politically. While reducing the amount guns on the street would logically reduce the number of shootings. Many gun advocates are quick to point out that firearms often find their way into the wrong hands. Legislation designed to restrict guns would prevent responsible people from protecting themselves.

The Consequences of Gun Crimes

Utah has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. A conviction can result in significant jail time. However, many people who are accused of gun crimes in Salt Lake City, may not realize they have committed an illegal act. For example, a person who is carrying a gun while under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be charged with a gun crime–even if they have a permit. The definition of a dangerous weapon according to Utah law is somewhat broad. According to state law, any type of device that can be used to cause bodily harm, death is considered a dangerous weapon. The most frequent cases of gun crimes in Salt Lake City involve the following:

  • Felony discharge of a firearm
  • Alteration of a weapon
  • Possession of loaded firearm in a vehicle or street
  • Giving a firearm to a minor
  • Possession of a dangerous weapon
